All you need

This was my bible for a week staying at Hawkshead and touring Lake District with partner and a couple of 11-year-old girls (daughter and her schoolfriend). Had it in my hand for most of the week and stuffed down by the driver's seat when it wasn't. Gives you a starting point on everything. My only suggestion would be more detailed road maps as I didn't buy a tourist map and sat nav is not much good for these things (poor signal on forested roads, no recognition of historical sites). Anyhow, buy it and double your interest/fun.

Old school guidebook, a bit redundant nowadays

Reviewed on August 12, 2021

There's probably nothing in this guidebook that you can't find on the web and probably much less. It's strongest on the historical context of the Lakes and the various artists etc who lived there or were inspired by the landscape. It's OK on the major sites but I discovered nothing new. The maps are pretty useless. As far as accommodation and dining is concerned, it's unreliable and out of date already - two of the three luxury hotel recommendations have gone out of business and lost their reputations decades ago. There is no mention of the trendy Cottage in the Wood or The Old Stamp House restaurant. I'm reluctantly beginning to think that maybe these sorts of guidebooks have had their day.
